Illustration and Photography in a harmonious standoff. You'd be forgiven for reading that sentence as two oxymorons, but you'd be wrong and Ken Taylor and Andreas Smetana would be pretty offended.

The brief came in from Smetana photography for a playing card character to be created that was both recognizable as one of the passive members of the gambling world's royal family. The challenge was to inject into this passive king enough attitude to plausibly hold back an overkeen gambler. Another contradiction!

Enter Ken Taylor. Master of high contrast, flat tone artworks that never skimp on impact.

Take a scroll down the various stages of the process from pencils to final art and you'll see the great result of combining two masters of their craft.
