Picnic and Play

We worked with Canada Bay Council to build community connections to some of the parks in Rhodes with some trial pop-up picnic tables.

Mike Watt, Irene Feleo and Bill Hope created some bright interactive artworks on tables - the tables are not only functional for picnics in the outdoors but also host some site specific fun games.

Read on to get the artists thoughts on the designs and project - or if you are keen to see them in person they are currently residing in Hoskins Reserve Rhodes.

My table design is based off the game Snakes and Ladders, I replaced the snakes and ladders with Blue tongues and twigs to make it something more in line with the nature in Rhodes. I have gone for a natural colour palette which I think will blend in with the park.  I hope that the community will enjoy using it. - Mike Watt

When It came to working up this design for the Rhodes community I was keen to create some thing that was relevant to the site but also engaging on its own terms. I’ve created a panorama of the local wildlife and habitat in the form of an “I spy” picture where users can try and spot all the lady beetles hiding in the picture. I love the idea of artworks mixing with practical objects and becoming an everyday part of the community . - Bill Hope

My picnic table design was created with the aim to illustrate an artwork that functions as both a fun interactive and educational game as well as a lively and colourful piece of art for the community. My maze is bright and geometric, with elements of Rhodes fauna and bird life scattered throughout so that children can spot and name these elements in their environment. My colour palette is inspired by the natural colours you would see around in a park - with bright blues and greens to reflect the water, sky and grass and bright highlights of oranges, pinks and reds to compliment and remind us of a warm summer day. I am excited to bring my artwork to life in a functional piece of furniture - I hope it stands out as a bright and detailed illustrative piece that engages with the Rhodes community. - Irene Feleo
