Mike Watt’s Mural Collaboration

Recently Mike Watt got to collaborate with some artists to create a sweet mural in Belmont. We asked him some questions about his involvement and how it all transpired.

Q. What was this collaboration inspired by?

A. Keo Match and Ana Benson of Cafe Macquire made the whole thing happen. Thanks heaps to those guys as there is no way it would of happened without their hard work. The town wanted something friendly so some of the guys came up with the theme. It was all quite loose, the only really planned part was the colour palette and that the theme was animals.

  Q. Where can we see this in the flesh? A. The walls are in Belmont about 25 minutes out of Newcastle.  Q. Whats it like to have so many people working on the one piece? How do you make it all tie together?  A. It was great fun, it was such a good group of guys, they’re all really chilled and talented with zero ego. I think the theme and the colours tied it all together, there are so many completely different styles but with the colour scheme and animal theme running through it really helped it all be held together. Just to give a shout out to the guys.. There was (in alphabetical order).- Ape 7 Chehehe Keo Match Ohnoes Skubes Mope Skulk And BMD painted the crocodile on the opposite wall.

  Q. I imagine animals are a really fun medium- can you talk us through the characters you did in this piece and what there names and personalities would be?  A. They were a fun subject. I don’t draw animals too often, when I got there I got a tiny bit freaked out that i had no idea what I was doing but I think I figured it out. The Quokka on the far left is mine, her name is Gertrid, she’s a sweet heart.. The monkey grabbing the horse, his name is Timmy, he’s a dick. The baboon posing with his panda wife (by Skulk) and they’re adopted pig son (by Ohnoes) is a family man, quite serious but very devoted. The cat above them… That’s Maybe, she is a bit of a space cadet. The sloth to the right, Kevin, he’s super chilled. I also painted a fish a dinosaur and a walrus somewhere… Maybe some other dudes too.

Q. The time lapse video is Rad- who is this Billy Zammit guy and where can we see more of his work?

A. Bill Zammit is a gun, it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on him. http://www.billyzammit.com/
