Irene Feleo Baseball

Irene Feleo's work is inspired by travel, adventure, symbolism and personal stories. She employs strong and bold hyper colour palettes along with fine lines, dotted patterns and geometric shapes. Working across various mediums from digital, painting and embroidery - she loves approaching a brief with a fresh perspective and enjoys the challenge to communicate stories visually.

Irene has recently left our Sydney shores for new adventures in Brooklyn, New York.

We caught up with Irene on what she's been up to in New York so far...

I've been eating...
Ramen! So much ramen. I have always been obsessed with it but in New York I made it my mission to visit all the top ones. So far my favourites have been Suzume in Williamsburg and Ippudo in the East Village. Nothing soothes the soul like a big bowl of ramen!

I've been seeing...
There is a lot of hustle and bustle in New York which I love. The daily commute from Williamsburg to Manhattan is kind of fascinating, so many hoards of people squashing into trains and walking in a million directions at the same time. My morning commute is definitely my favourite people watching past times.

I've been hearing...
I have become obsessed with the musical Hamilton and have been listening to it non stop. The musical is playing in Broadway but it is so popular that it is completely sold out for the foreseeable future and re-sell tickets are going for a minimum of $500 USD! So I have to settle on listening to the soundtrack on spotify and making it my mission to win the lottery to one day see it haha.

Bingomation

I've been working on...
I recently got a full time job at an amazing design studio called Spontaneous in Midtown. I have been working on a bunch of super fun and creative projects with them so definitely keep your eyes peeled for when they come out! You can check out their work here: http://www.spon.com/.

In regards to personal projects I have just finished up a fun little animation for a tumblr project called 'Bingomation'. where contributed make a small looping 5 second animation to go with their assigned number. I have also been doing some small gif animations but the goal this year I think is to start working on a short film that I can submit to festivals next year. I did a small animation that was shown in Berlin as part of the Pictoplasma character walk and that was a lot of fun - so I would love another project like that to work on slowly while I balance full time work. I really want to develop my storytellings skills with something a little bit more long-form so I think this could be a good way to do it!

Ladies Drawing Night

My favourite place to work...
is my studio apartment in Williamsburg. I am subletting at the moment but it is a big space with lots of natural light and is just lovely to be in in general.

To get inspired I...
Visit galleries, comic book stores and any other fun happenings around the city. I am living around the corner from the Brooklyn Art Library which is an amazing collection of sketchbooks from around the world. Another favourite stop is Desert Island Comics which has a ridiculous collection of the latest graphic novels, magazines and zines and the staff are super friendly with helping out for any recommendations. I also recently attended Ladies Drawing Night which is a night held by these three lovely ladies that encourages getting together, having a bit of a draw and paint over wine and good company. Don't mind if I do!
