ARTIST FEATURE: GINA KIEL
Free spirit, Gina Kiel, is an award winning illustrator based in Wellington, New Zealand. She creates feminine yet strong images that exude sensuality and explore ideas of life, death and pop culture using a bright psychedelic palette and a range of analog and digital mediums. Gina is constantly creating new, amazing things. We had a chat with her about her inspirations and influences behind her beautiful work.
When I was a child I wanted to be... a mermaid fairy space punk
I’m inspired by... juxtapositions, photography, pop culture, females, the human body, psychedelic, the universe... everything
My influences are... emotions, people, colour, the world, limits vs no limits, evolving...
People I admire... all the people out there in the world dealing with hard times and also, mothers
The tools I can’t live without are... I guess like the challenge of creating with whatever is available... if I was stuck on a desert island I would enjoy making art with sticks and stones
The highlights over the past 12 months have been... my son turning three, meeting the crew from No Cure Magazine, working on some super fun collabs with some fav artist friends (coming out soon!), designing a neon sign with Inject Design for Fat Freddy’s Drop new Album....and getting a hair cut.
Advice I have to share for those who want to get into this profession... picture a vision of your ideal life/career in five years and go for it, but just don’t worry if it veers off in another direction, life’s too short to worry.
The latest project I’m working on... a piece for No Cure Magazine’s next issue launch exhibition in Brisbane.
