Chris Wahl Illustrates Die Antwoord
Once again Chris Wahl’s illustrations have managed to capture the personality and style of their subjects. These works feature Yo-Landi Vi$$er and Ninja from the South African rap-rave group, Die Antwoord. We asked him some questions to get a bit more insight on these awesome works.
Q. You recently paid homage to Die Antwoord’s Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er- what was it about these characters that drew you to illustrate them?
A. Much like their music and videos, they are weird, quirky, ugly and unique characters and for an artist these are attractive attributes to draw.
Q. The style you chose is inky and gritty much like the characters- was this intentional?
A. It was, I’d much rather alter my drawing style to suit the subject matter, rather than vice versa, which can be too limiting. While getting a likeness of the subject is important, having their personality come across via the tone and style of the drawing is equally important to me.
Q. The portraits look like a blend between traditional and digital, can you talk us though your process?
A. The traditional drawing was mixed media using brush and ink, white paint, pens and grey toned markers. This was then scanned then digitally coloured in Photoshop, with additional effects added with custom brushes and overlaid textures.
